Back Wheel Mount

UofT Supermileage (UTSM) SolidWorks Design March 2026

Overview

In March 2026, I designed this back wheel mount for the UTSM 2027 prototype vehicle. The project involved reverse-engineering a real-world part to create a base model, which was then modified for optimized performance. A key modification included the addition of two structural slots designed to reduce unnecessary material weight without compromising the part's integrity.

The primary objective was to enhance the vehicle's mass distribution and stress properties, ensuring the mount can withstand the operational loads of the racing environment while contributing to the overall efficiency of the prototype.

The Learning Curve

Being new to SolidWorks, this project represented a significant learning curve. Mastering the transition from technical requirements to a 3D parametric model required a deep dive into sketch relations, extrusions, and hole-callout features. Overcoming these initial challenges allowed me to understand the nuances of design for manufacturing (DFM) and structural optimization.
